How to Build a Fire Pit 

September's drawing to a close and with it brings the chillier weather, the start of pumpkin spice everything season and bonfires. When it comes to bonfire pits, why spend hundreds of dollars on one when you can make your own in just a few easy steps, giving yourself a weekend project?

1. Get your Circumference Ready.  Where do you want the fire pit? How big is it going to be? Make sure it's far enough away from the home, fences, and trees for safety. No one wants a fun bonfire turning into a disaster. Place your stones where you want your fire pit. then get the spray paint ready to mark the outer edges of where the stones lie. 

2. Dig it Out. Dig out your designated spray-painted circle down to 6 inches.
 
3. Gravel Up. Fill the hole with enough gravel to make it level with the ground. You don't want your fire pit turning into a pond when the rain pours down. 

4. Masonry. Once you've put your first ring of stones around the outer edge of the circle you filled with gravel, grab a rubber mallet to stamp the stones so that they are flat and even with each other. You don't want small cracks in between. If you're using a metal ring, place it in the middle and make sure that you're placing the stones right up against it. Once you've the whole ring of first stones, start on your second and add masonry adhesive onto the bottom of each stone, staggering the placement of the second row (the middle of each stone should sit on the end seams of the row beneath it).Tighten and even out the stones with your rubber mallet and repeat with the third row.
